Silk press season is fast approaching and if you're thinking about straightening your natural hair after a long stretch of wearing it curly, there's some preparation to do before you let that heat hit your strands.

Happy Sunday. I'm deep in preparation over here, getting my fine hair ready before any heat touches it, and I want to show you how so you can do the same if this is your season too.

In Today's Issue:

→ Preparing fine hair for a straightening season

→ Giving yourself permission to change how you care for your hair

→ A quick heat tip, plus this week's read and video

This week's focus

You're Allowed to Change How You Care for Your Hair

Somewhere along the way, a lot of women started feeling like once we went natural, wearing our hair any other way meant we lacked self love or didn't love our natural texture the way it naturally grew out of our heads. I don't have that belief. Freedom from the opinions of people will allow you to style your hair anyway you please.

That's why I'm unapologetically becoming a straight hair natural. Why? For one, my hair...your hair is yours to care for and style as you like. For two, how you manage it is allowed to change as your lifestyle changes and it's your prerogative in the words of Mr. Brown.

For me, the season of life I'm in calls for a bit less maintenance along with the desire for a different aesthetic. It's not to please anyone else.

When you choose to wear your hair straight, that doesn't make you any less committed to healthy hair, or any less committed to who you were born to be. Caring well for what God has given you was never about one particular style. It's about paying attention, using wisdom, and not tying your worth to your curl pattern.

"How you care for your hair is allowed to change as your life changes."

So if you've been holding back from a change because you're unsure what it says about you, I'd tell you it doesn't have to say anything at all. You can wear your hair the way that serves this season of your life and still be exactly who you are.

Care for it well. Be wise, love how you look in the mirror and keep it moving.

FAITHFUL STRAND TIP

Test One Section First

Before you straighten your whole head, take one small section and straighten it first. Is it enough heat? Too much? Always start with less. 380 degrees is a good place to start. You can rock a "fluffy" silk press and still have very manageable hair. In fact, bone straight isn't the best look for those of us with fine hair anyway.

The decision to go natural isn't one that most women of color take lightly. That's because learning to care for coily hair in its natural state is completely different from caring for straight hair, including relaxed hair.

"What change have you been wanting to make with your hair, and what would help you feel ready for it?"

Take your time and put aside the judgments of other people. Journal about it if that's something you enjoy.
Then hit reply and share because... I'm nosey LOL.
