Framework stage: Stewardship

If you've noticed your hair behaving a little differently since summer arrived, I guarantee you're not alone.

What I want to share this week is my thoughts on wash day and frequency during the summer months. Some of the advice floating around is right for certain people. None of it is right for everyone.

This week, we're getting into what actually determines how often you should be washing your fine natural hair in summer and what to watch for so you can find your own sweet spot.

In This Issue:

→ Why your summer wash day schedule may need adjusting...or maybe not

→ What determines how often fine hair needs to be washed during the summer

→ A question to help you figure out what your hair is actually asking for

Fine Natural Hair Regimen for Summer: A Week by Week Breakdown

Fine natural hair summer regimen

Updating my fine natural hair routine for summer is something I make a point to do every year. The heat changes what my hair actually needs, and what worked in the cooler months won’t always hold up once the humidity hits. Below is my summer hair regimen for fine natural hair, broken down by frequency, so you can use it as a framework for your own.

FAITHFUL STRAND TIP

What Constantly Wetting Your Hair Can Do to Your Strands

Hygral fatigue is damage that is caused from the constant swelling and contracting of the hair cuticle when the hair is washed. Fine hair is particularly vulnerable because it has a smaller diameter and less structural resilience than coarser textures. If you're washing more frequently in summer and your hair is starting to feel mushy, losing elasticity, hygral fatigue may be a factor. Doing an oil based pre-poo (coconut oil being the goat) can protect your hair from this type of mechanical damage.

Your Wash Day Schedule in Summer Isn't One-Size-Fits-All

A lot of natural hair content will tell you to wash more frequently in summer. Sweat, buildup, swimming — the logic makes sense on the surface. And for some people, more frequent washing is exactly right. If you're using heavier gels and oils, spending time in the pool, or live in a climate where your scalp is consistently dealing with buildup, yes you may need to wash a little more often than usual.

But here's what that same advice tends to leave out: too much washing creates its own set of issues. Every wash day is a manipulation session. Fine strands have less structural support than coarser textures, which means they're more vulnerable to the wear and tear that comes from repeated washing, detangling, and styling. Add in excess water absorption and release that comes with frequent wetting, and you're also looking at potential hygral fatigue.

The answer isn't always to wash your hair more frequently. Sometimes it's to adjust the amount of product you use. At other times, it's adjusting your wash schedule to meet your hair's personal needs.

"The question isn't how often should you wash in summer. It's how often does your hair need it."

The other piece that can get overlooked this time of year is protein. If you live somewhere humid, summer brings more ambient moisture which can throw off your hair's moisture and protein balance. Obviously, that doesn't mean you should stop moisturizing. It just means you should pay attention to how your hair is responding to the added moisture in the air.

Fine hair that's getting a lot of environmental moisture may actually need a protein treatment to stay balanced. Knowing the difference and acting on it is exactly the kind of intentional care we work through inside the Academy. So, if you have been feeling like your hair is speaking a foreign language that you don't understand, the Academy was made for you.
