Fine hair doesn't need a heavy hand with products. It needs the right product and the right amount.

Happy Sunday, friend.

It's tempting to reach for more product when your edges or your temple grays aren't cooperating. More edge control to keep flyaways down. More cream to blend the grays coming in at your temples. But that's not what fine hair responds to.

In Today's Issue:

→ Why more product doesn't get you better results

→ The one day a week that makes your regular products work better

→ How to grow in and keep your edges healthy

→ Trying a fluffy press on fine natural hair

Stage: CLARITY

This week's focus

Fine Hair Doesn't Need a Heavy Hand

One thing I've learned about fine hair is that using more product doesn't necessarily give you a better result. That is especially true around the hairline. Too much product can leave fine hair looking stiff and weighed down.

When it comes to your edges, there's also nothing wrong with using edge control. The key is choosing the right product and using only as much as you need.

My go-to edge control is from Bask & Lather. It contains castor oil, which has properties that may help support healthy hair growth, something I especially appreciate in a product I'm using around my edges.

A 2026 dermatology review from researchers at Wayne State University found that ricinoleic acid, the primary fatty acid in castor oil, may have potential for supporting hair growth because of the way it interacts with a pathway known to inhibit hair growth.

If you have gray hair in your temple area, it can also be tempting to use a lot of product to tame those strands. Gray hair can behave differently from the rest of your hair, but adding more and more product isn't necessarily going to make it cooperate.

Working with your texture is much easier than trying to force it to behave a certain way. This is one reason I've become a straight hair natural. Keeping my hair stretched and straight helps the gray hair around my temples blend more easily with the rest of my hair, so I only need a small amount of edge control to smooth the area.

"A little goes a long way with fine hair."

Want to try the edge control I use? We're not necessarily trying to sculpt our edges here. We're simply smoothing them. But if sculpting is your thing, it can do that too!

FAITHFUL STRAND TIP

Give Your Hairline a Product Free Day

Wash day is a good day to skip edge control completely and let your hairline breathe. Product builds up at the root over time, even the lightweight kind, and that buildup is part of what makes edges look dull. One day without it a week is enough to make a difference. Your regular products will work better the rest of the week because of it.
