Sometimes taking better care of your hair isn’t about adding something new. It’s knowing when to adjust and when to leave well enough alone.

In Today's Issue:

→ What changes when your hair starts “aging”

→ A rainy-day backup for protecting a silk press

→ One simple rule to follow that protects fine hair

Stage: CONSISTENCY

WASH DAY NOTES

From my hair this week

Salon Wash Day

Friday was salon wash day: a micro trim and silk press. Staying on top of your ends can mean less needs to come off when trim day rolls around, which is especially important when you’re trying to retain length.

And with the humidity mostly gone, this is a good time of year to get a little more mileage out of a silk press.

Going Gray Gracefully With Natural Hair: What Changes and How to Pivot

Your natural hair may not behave at 50, 60, or 70 the way it did at 30. That doesn't mean something is wrong with it. It just means it's time to pivot.

Hairbrella Satin Lined Rain Hat

Humidity season may be winding down, but rain can still ruin a fresh silk press, and fast. So I ordered a Hairbrella Satin Lined Rain Hat to keep on hand for rainy days. It's completely waterproof.

TREASURE THIS

This week's focus

Maintain It. Don't Redo It.

One thing I've learned about making a style last on my fine hair is that I don't need to keep redoing it. Once my hair is styled, I'm mostly trying to maintain what I've already done. No extra twisting, braiding or applying heat.

Here's the thing...day five hair isn't going to look exactly like it did on day one. There's no need to pull out a flat iron again, pile more product on or completely restyle it every morning just because it doesn't look freshly done anymore.

A better use of your time would be to protect your style at night, make small adjustments when needed and leave your hair alone as much as possible. That's especially important for fine hair because all the extra "handling" aka manipulation adds up to unnecessary wear and tear.

"Once it's styled, maintain it and leave it alone."

That's the kind of simple approach I follow with my own fine natural hair, along with dozens of other principles that I share in the Fine Hair Mastery Guide. The goal isn't to do more to your hair. It's to understand what your fine strands need so you can stop doing the things they don't.
