What Summer Stewardship Looks Like for Natural Hair

Summer Hair Care for Black Hair [2026 Guide]

Summer brings with it longer days, warmer weather, and, for many naturalistas, a whole new set of hair challenges. Whether it's dryness, frizz, or frustration from styles not holding, summer can test your patience. But what if the key isn't doing more to your hair, but rethinking why being on top of your summer hair care routine matters in the first place?

FAITHFUL STRAND TIP

The Sun Affects Your Hair the Same Way It Affects Your Skin

Extended time outdoors without any protection will dry your strands out over time. A hat or scarf works, and so does a light oil with natural UV properties. Raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil, and avocado oil are good options to work into your summer routine.

This week's focus

Good Stewardship Doesn't Overhaul. It Adjusts.

Summer shows up and your hair is still your hair. The texture didn't change. What changed is the air around it. Increased humidity affects how your strands behave and how long your hair retains moisture. That's what calls for a change in your routine.

Natural hair varies widely in porosity, density, texture, and how it responds to temperature. The summer heat amplifies whatever your hair already tends toward. If your hair leans toward being dry, the sun and heat will pull moisture out fast. If you are prone to getting product buildup, the warmer weather will have you sweating in your scalp. Then, depending on the products you are using, the end result will be weighed down strands and styles that don't last.

Knowing how to make those adjustments as the seasons change is something we work through inside the Faithful Strand Academy, specifically in the Stewardship phase. And while stewardship is most commonly talked about in the context of finances, the concept applies to anything God has entrusted to us. Our time, our bodies, our hair included.

"Increased humidity affects how your strands behave and how long your hair retains moisture."

In the Faith Based Natural Hair Framework, stewardship is the stage where you move from establishing the firm foundation of who you are in Christ to practicing intentional hair care. It's about making thoughtful decisions with what you already have, including adjusting how you care for your hair as the season changes.

SACRED REFLECTIONS

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up."

Galatians 6:9

This verse is usually applied to ministry, persevering in trials, and continuing in faith. But I think about it in the context of consistency too. The small, unglamorous decisions you make for your hair week after week are a form of doing good. Tending to what God gave you matters.

Many Blessings,

Michelle
