Hi Reader,

June is here. And so is the humidity. If your hair looked great last night and completely different this morning, you're not buggin'. Something real is happening to fine natural hair this time of year and it's not because you skipped a step or used the wrong hair product.

This week, we're getting into what humidity does to fine strands and what you can do about it before you walk out the door.

In This Issue:

→ Why humidity frizzes fine natural hair even when it's moisturized

→ One thing to do before going outside on a high humidity day

→ A Scripture for the week when you feel like nothing is working the way it should

→ The full summer hair care guide is on the blog — link inside

Why Fine Natural Hair Frizzes in Humidity Even When It's Moisturized

Fine natural hair frizz in humidity

You moisturized and sealed. And your hair still did what it wanted the moment you stepped outside the door. This post breaks down why humidity affects fine natural hair and my recommendations for how you should prep your hair throughout the summer so it doesn't end up a frizzy mess.

FAITHFUL STRAND TIP

Seal Before You Step Out

On a day when the humidity is high and you still want to sport your curls, apply a light gel over a light sealing oil to your curls as a last step before you leave the house. Don't use a leave-in conditioner. The leave-in is the moisture. The gel and oil are the barrier products. Fine strands lose that distinction fast when you're in a rush, but the order matters more in summer than any other time of year. A flaxseed gel (the gold standard) over your leave-in will give help your cuticle to remain closed so humidity doesn't ruin your style.

This week's focus

Humidity Doesn't Care How Well You Moisturized

Here's the thing. When humidity hits, it pushes moisture into the hair shaft from the outside. That would be a good thing if your hair were dry but let's assume it's not because moisturizing regularly is what you do.

So, here's the deal. Fine strands have a smaller diameter, which means the cuticle layer has less room to absorb and release moisture in a controlled way. So when the air is heavy with humidity, fine hair doesn't just get a little frizzy. It can completely change shape, texture, and feel within minutes of stepping outside.

This is why adding more product to your hair on a high-humidity day doesn't fix the problem. If the cuticle isn't sealed before you go out, the humidity gets inside of your strands anyway. Your moisturizer did its job while you were indoors. But without something to close the door behind it, a sealing step, a gel layer, something that signals "closed" to the cuticle, the outside air walks right back in. That's the frizz you're seeing. It's just physics.

"It's not a product problem. It's a sealing problem on a moisture-heavy day."

Knowing this should change what you do to your hair and when you do it. One thing to focus on is how you dry your hair. Traditional blow dryers push hot air onto the cuticle from the outside, which can lift it further and leave fine strands more vulnerable to humidity. The RevAir works differently. It reverses the airflow so your hair dries from the inside out, cuticle down — which is exactly the direction you want when you're about to step into a humid day. I use it on my own fine natural hair and it's one of the tools I reach for on a regular basis, even when it's hot and humid out.

Because, no matter the season, I keep my hair stretched. This is one of the best ways to prevent knots and tangles. Then, when I'm done stretching my hair with the RevAir. I use the tiniest amount of hair butter to twist or braid my hair for a twist/braid out.

NOTE: If you are setting your hair in a protective style with twists or braids, stretch it, but apply a light layer of flaxseed gel as your first sealant before any oil.

SACRED REFLECTIONS

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on you, because they trust in you."

Isaiah 26:3

The outside conditions don't have to determine what happens on the inside. That's true for your hair and it's true for everything else in life. When the outside world is unpredictable, God knows you can't control it. What He wants if for you to stay rooted in the one thing that doesn't move. His Word.

Many Blessings,

Michelle
